mitt romney to show up in denver. the first debate generally favor challengers. the president never really shined in. is that the right thing to do? >> strategically that's what campaigns do. when you look at -- i watched most of the republican debates. i think governor romney is a very good debater. there's certainly things you can't teach in debates, and that's in terms of how you attack your opponent. he had his bad moments, i.e., his 10,0$10,000 bet, but he was pretty solid. i remember during the primaries when we were prepping against him, it really wasn't -- he wasn't a candidate we were focused on in terms of being concerned about debating. all that being said, usually the challenger in this circumstance would go in with lower expectations. the problem here is because romney's campaign is in such a terrible position, and it's flailing. everyone is fixated on, is this the moment, the debate that turns things around? the expectations are higher for governor romney, and that is the problem. that's what the campaign and governor romney have put themselves in this position where i

which is going to make the media more likely to declare romney the winner of that first debate. which is frankly why i think that romney might win that first debate in the media. obviously i want the president to win but it's not going to happen because the media does not want a lopsided election. they don't want it to be over by next wednesday. so if somehow the media does declare that obama is the winner that first debate, i will set aside my tigers mug for a white sox one for one show only. that's it. that's my bet and i'm not even going to mean it. but romney's obama is a liar strategy, it only works if the media doesn't notice that romney is lying during the debates himself. maybe one thing that the media likes less than a lopsided race is a hypocrite so it is risky for romney to raise the strategy. since his whole candidacy has been built upon the lies, it is one thing he does pretty well, the strategy of focusing on lies could get him hoisted. maybe i'll go order a stupid white sox mug just in case but i'm n

is for sure. the debate this week in denver on wednesday is a big deal for the romney campaign. he has to make his case, and he has to mak his case he's a better candidate than barack obama. he has to throw some punches. he can't just kind of go in there sort of apologetically and be very gentle with obama. he has to really throw some punches and show people why he's the better candidate. i think a lot of these polls are a little bit overstated. i think the democrats have been oversampled in a lot of polls, and i don't think there's that huge of a gap between romney and obama. nonetheless, he has to make a really strong stand in the first debate. this is probably the most important debate for him at this point in the campaign. >> i don't want to let that statement about polls go unanswered. eugene robinson's piece today is about what he calls the new conspiracy. republicans diluted that there are skewed polls. paul ryan was the latest one to join on the bandwagon last night talking about wisconsin. >> i don't believe that particular poll. i won't get into the methodologies about it. >> they we

and think about team romney's calling the president a liar in advance of the debates. what is that strategy all about? mostly it is about working the refs the media so the media is primed to listen for any falsehoods from the president during the debate. now, as you know, debates are all about managing expectations. remember that george w. bush did "better than expected" in his debates because he managed to form complete sentences so if romney can make the media expect obama lies, they'll be primed to watch for those lies at all times which is going to make the media more likely to declare romney the winner of that first debate. which is frankly why i think that that first debate in the media. obviously i want the president to win but it's not going to happen because the media does not want a lopsided election. they don't want it to be over by next wednesday. so if somehow the media does declare that obama is the winner that first debate, i will set aside my tigers mug for a white sox one for one show only. that's it.

and romney says. >> any great stories from '96 debate prep with clinton? >> do i have any great stories? i think debrat prep is like vegas. what happens there stays there. sorry. >> jonathan, i have to ask you. there was a famous story. the dole people thought they had this great trick they were going to pull on you guys, that first debate in 1996 where clinton had fired the white house travel logs in 1993 and emerged this big scandal. >> i was there for that, too. >> what did the dole people try to do to you guys to throw clinton off his game? >> you're not supposed to do this on live tv, but i do not remember. >> they put the guy in the front row who had run the white house travel office at the debate because they thought clinton was going to look at him and it was going to knock him off his game and stride. of course, the reality was clinton didn't know what the guy looked like. >> you're right. one thing clinton is so good at is the audience. it doesn't matter who is out there and no matter how hostile it appears to them. whoever is out there, your job is to win them over and ask them.
